📝How to Add a Custom Grade Scale

This guide explains how to create and apply a custom grade scale in a SchoolsPLP course.

Custom grade scales are commonly used when schools want students to view a placeholder grade such as “Check SIS” instead of a traditional letter grade.

Step 1: Open Course Setup

  1. Select your course.
  2. Click Course Setup in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Open the Course Editor in a New Tab.

Step 2: Access Course Settings

  1. In the Course Editor, click the wrench icon (upper-right corner).
  2. Select Course Settings.

Step 3: Add a New Grade Scale

  1. Scroll to the Grade Scales section.
  2. Click Add Grade Scale.
  3. Name the grade scale (example: Check SIS, Check Infinite Campus, Check PowerSchool, etc.).

Select the Grade Scale Type

Choose one of the following types:

  • Point
  • Percent (%)
  • Percentile (class rank)
  • Distribution

Most schools selecting “Check SIS” will choose Percent (%).

Step 4: Configure the Grade Scale

  1. Under Grade, type:

    Check SIS

  2. In the Percent column, enter:

    0

  3. Under anything lower, enter:

    P

  4. Click Done.

This configuration ensures that instead of displaying a traditional letter grade, students will see the custom label.

Step 5: Apply the Grade Scale

  1. In the Gradebook Options section of Course Settings:
    • Select the newly created grade scale (e.g., Check SIS).

Under Course Grade View, check the box for:

    • Percent (%)
  2. Click Save in the upper-right corner.

Final Result

Both teachers and students will now see “Check SIS” displayed in place of a traditional letter grade within the course gradebook.

Why Use a Custom Grade Scale?

Schools commonly use this feature when:

  • Official grades are stored in a Student Information System (SIS)
  • Schools want to prevent grade discrepancies between systems
  • Teachers want students to check Infinite Campus, PowerSchool, or another SIS for official grades

Important Notes

  • This change applies only to the selected course.
  • Percent view must be enabled for the custom scale to display properly.
  • Students will still see their percentage score, but the letter grade will be replaced with your custom label.
