How to Make Sibling and Child Copies of a Course

How to Make Sibling and Child Copies of a Course

When teachers want to make a copy of a course (example copying course B below), they need to decide if they want their copied course (C) to only receive updates from the parent course in the master list (example A below), or if they want their copied course to receive updates from A and B.

A=Parent course (usually a course in your master list).

B=Child course (usually a course created at your school level) receives updates from A.

C=Either a copy of B which only receives updates from A (sibling course), OR a copy of B which updates receives updates from A and B (child course* of B).

* A child course copy can only be made of a course with no student enrollments.

To create sibling and child copies of a course follow these steps after launching the course editor inside SchoolsPLP. Click the course name, click Course Setup, then click the top link to launch the course editor in a new tab.

Steps for a Sibling Course:

  1. In the top right corner click the waffle icon and choose teacher app.

 2. Once the screen with the course cards opens, click the three dots on the course you would like to copy (B) and choose Create a copy (C).

* If you are admin this process will look different. Please email support@schoolsplp.com for assistance.

3. Your role can be left as is and click NEXT.

4. The default schedule type is Continuous and term is for a year when the course is set for 180 days and semester courses with 90 days. After entering this information click CREATE.

5. The copied course (C) is a sibling course. Changes to Course (B) will not affect this sibling course. If you want more sibling courses that are not affected by changes to Course (B), continue to copy Course (B). All of these sibling copied courses (C) are connected to the same parent course (A) and they will receive updates from this course in your district master list.

Steps for a Child Course  * A child course copy can only be made of a course with no student enrollments.

*If you need to make a child course of a course with existing enrollments please email support@schoolsplp.com for assistance.

Before enrolling students in a course, you can create child copies of the course so curriculum changes will trickle down to the copies. For example, you teach three periods of Algebra and want to add an assignment to your 1st period course that will automatically trickle down to periods 2 and 3, you will want to make a child copies of period 1.

  1. Click the three dots on the course card and click Create a copy.

2. Click to choose a copy action and choose Updates (Derivative Child Copy).

3. Your role can be left as is and click next.

4. The default schedule is Continuous and year courses are usually tagged with 180 days and semester courses with 90 days. After entering this information click CREATE.

5. The copied course is a child course (C). Changes to Course A and B will affect this child course (C).
